Variable frequency drive cable

We buy surplus VFD cable

Three conductors, three grounds and a shield, bought for one drive and left over from another.

VFD cable is built to carry a pulse-width modulated output without radiating noise: three phase conductors, a symmetrical ground system and an overall shield. It is specified by drive size, which means a change in equipment leaves a reel nobody can use on the next job.

Because it is a specialty item, the reels tend to sit longer, and the tags tend to still be on them.

How VFD cable is identified

  • Conductor size and the number of grounds
  • Shield type, foil or braid, and whether it is 100 percent covered
  • Voltage rating, 600V or 1kV
  • Jacket color and any drive-specific marking
  • Remaining footage, since drives are often fed in short runs

Grounded three ways

The symmetrical ground conductors are what separate VFD cable from ordinary tray cable, and they are why it cannot be substituted freely. We price it as its own item, and we need the construction, not just the gauge.

Wire and cable only

We do not buy transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, MCCs, generators, bus plugs, chillers, machinery or unrelated scrap. Mixed loads are fine as long as we are quoting the wire portion.

VFD cable questions

Do you buy short lengths of VFD cable?
Sometimes, if the reel is large enough to matter. A 40-foot cut is usually not worth a trip on its own.
Is VFD cable worth more than tray cable?
It is priced separately because of the shield and grounds. Send the legend and we will quote it as its own line.
Do you take VFD cable with the shield damaged?
Point it out. Shield damage near the end can be cut back; damage through the run affects the whole reel.
