Grounding and bonding

We buy surplus grounding wire

Green insulated and bare copper, bought by the spool and used in short lengths. The leftovers accumulate in every shop.

Equipment grounding conductor is sized to the overcurrent device, not to the circuit, which means a shop needs several sizes on hand and uses a few feet of each per job.

The result is a shelf of half-used spools of green THHN and bare copper, in sizes from #14 to 3/0, none of them empty.

How grounding wire is identified

  • Size and whether it is insulated or bare
  • Green insulation versus another color used as a ground
  • Feet remaining on the spool
  • Stranded or solid
  • Whether several partial spools can be combined into one lot

Combine the shelf

One partial spool is rarely worth a trip. A shelf of eight partial spools across four sizes is a different conversation, which is why we ask people to list each size rather than describe the pile.

Wire and cable only

We do not buy transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, MCCs, generators, bus plugs, chillers, machinery or unrelated scrap. Mixed loads are fine as long as we are quoting the wire portion.
