Aluminum conductors

We buy surplus aluminum wire and cable

Most of the big reels on a residential or light commercial site are aluminum. They are also the reels that get left behind.

Aluminum AA-8000 series conductor carries service and feeder current on a large share of North Carolina construction, from 2-2-2-4 SER on a house to 500 MCM feeders in a warehouse. It is lighter than copper, cheaper per amp, and it comes on big reels.

Because it is ordered generously and installed by length, partial aluminum reels are the single most common thing we are asked about.

How aluminum is identified

  • Jacket print showing the type and the assembly, for example 2-2-2-4 SER
  • AA-8000 or AL printed on the conductor or jacket
  • Silver conductor at a cut end, not copper-colored
  • Footage remaining and reel count for assemblies
  • Whether the reel has been exposed to weather for years

Lighter metal, bigger reels

Aluminum is priced on the alloy, the size and the footage, not on the scale weight, so a reel that feels light can still be a good reel. The identifier is the print legend, which is why a photo of it settles most questions.

Wire and cable only

We do not buy transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, MCCs, generators, bus plugs, chillers, machinery or unrelated scrap. Mixed loads are fine as long as we are quoting the wire portion.

Aluminum wire & cable questions

Do you buy aluminum SER partials?
Yes. 2-2-2-4 and 1/0-1/0-1/0-2 are the most common assemblies in this state and are bought constantly.
Is aluminum worth less than copper?
Per pound, yes. Per reel of large feeder, it can still be a significant amount, and the footage matters more than the weight.
Do you buy bare aluminum conductor?
Yes if it is identifiable building or service conductor. Mixed aluminum scrap is outside what we buy.
