What a scrap yard is buying
A scrap yard buys weight and grades it by metal content. Insulation, jacket, shielding and packaging are costs to them, not value, and a usable reel of 500 MCM is worth the same as the same weight of chopped conductor.
That is a reasonable business. It is simply a different business from buying a reel that another contractor can install.
What a wire buyer is buying
A wire buyer pays for type, size, footage and condition, because the reel can go back into service. A tagged, sealed reel of XHHW is a product; the same copper chopped into three-foot pieces is material.
This is why the same reel can be worth materially more than its metal content, and why we ask for the tag and the legend before anything else.
Where the line actually falls
- Still wire: tagged reels, partial reels with readable print, cleanly removed cable with an intact jacket, sealed boxes and spools.
- Scrap: chopped conductor, burnt cable, stripped and mixed wire, heavily contaminated material, and anything the legend no longer identifies.
We buy the first list. We do not buy the second, and we will tell you which one you have rather than quote something that cannot be honored.
The practical test
Ask whether another electrician could install this reel tomorrow. If yes, it is surplus wire. If the answer is no because the jacket is torn, the length is unknown or the type cannot be established, it is scrap — and no amount of photographing will change that.
